BOATING SAFETY
Michael Richter, Jack Stange and Cmdr. Carol Johnson host a Boating Safety Table at West Marine in West Islip.
It's always a pleasure meeting many experienced and some new boaters. We offer everyone who comes by a free vessel check and information on what equipment is required by the Coast Guard to be on their boat to pass inspection. We discuss the benefits of being a member of the USPS. Thanks to Dan and Heather, management of West Marine, for being so accommodating. We look forward to working with them on future activities.

ABOUT
OUR MISSION:
To promote recreational boating safety through education and civic activities while providing fellowship for our members.
USPS® was born in 1914
as a sub-division of the Boston Yacht Club with the objective of instructing sailing yachtsmen in the handling and navigation of the small powered vessels that were becoming popular. In addition to its educational activities it also become a social organization, with monthly meetings that featured guest speakers on various nautical subjects. It became a nationwide confederation of "Power Squadrons" with no yacht club affiliations. This rapid development of the USPS is directly attributable to the many thousands of hours and nautical miles of practical experience from thousands of yachtsmen and seafarers.
It is true that most of us do not engage in extensive ocean cruising, but lake, bay, river and offshore coastal cruising are also critically demanding in the arts of seamanship and navigation. For those whose interest lies in ocean cruising or racing, you will always find in your travels skippers and navigators who are USPS members and/or USPS trained.
Of all the 55,000 USPS members throughout the world, not one USPS instructor has ever received any monetary compensation for his/her voluntary services in the teaching the art of safe and practical seamanship. In 2017 the United States Power Squadron became America's Boating Club.
America's Boating Club Captree is one of fifteen (15) squadrons that comprise Long Island's District 3 (D3). The squadron was founded in March, 1951. We are an active and sociable group of boating people dedicated to promoting the principles of safe boating and fellowship on the water. We are actively engaged in various public services to improve the quality of the boating experience for our members and the boating public.
You can find us on Long Island's beautiful south shore, centrally located between West Islip and Massapequa. Our home waters encompass The Great South Bay. Look for our colorful Burgee and give us a hail.
