One of Our Own Honored! Charlie Virga Receives 2 District 3 Awards!
On October 26th at the District 3 Educational conference At the Marriott Hotel in Melville, NY, Our very own Charlie Virga was honored with 2 awards.
The first award he received was the MIRA. It is given to the squadron that has a program to increase Membership and Retention. Each year a full report is submitted to National about our activities through the year and our results. Last year we won a trophy as the best in the USA. “It was quite a honor for me since I been doing this job for years.” Says Virga.
The next award he received was the "Dominick Segrete Memorial Award. This award is for a member of D/3 who has gone above and beyond for his/her own or other squadrons in D/3. This was given to Charlie for being the Chairperson for this conference for the past 30 years and the outstanding work he has done in that job.
Needless to say that we at America’s Boating Club Captree are very proud to have Charlie in our club. And is an inspiration to all our members especially us new members! We are very proud of him and are honored to call him a friend and shipmate.

BOATING SAFETY
Michael Richter, Jack Stange and Cmdr. Carol Johnson hosted Captree’s first Boating Safety Table of 2019 at West Marine in West Islip on this rainy Saturday morning in April.
It was a pleasure meeting many experienced and some new boaters. We offered everyone who came by a free vessel check and information on what equipment is required by the Coast Guard to be on their boat to pass inspection. We discussed the benefits of being a member of the USPS and everyone who passed left with a Captree brochure in hand. Thanks to Dan and Heather, management of West Marine, for being so accommodating. We look forward to working with them on future activities.

ABOUT
USPS® was born in 1914
as a subdivison of the Boston Yacht Club with the ojective of instructing sailing yachtsmen in the handling and navigation of the small powered vessels that were becoming popular. In addition to its educational activities it also become a social organization, with monthly meetings that featured guest speakers on various nautical subjects. It became a nationwide confederation of "Power Squadrons" with no yacht club affliliations. This rapid development of the USPS is directly attributable to the many thousands of hours and nautical miles of practical experience from thousands of yachtsmen and seafarers.
It is true that most of us do not engage in extensive ocean cruising, but lake, bay, river and offshore coastal crusing are also critically demanding in the arts of seamanship and navigation. For those whose interest lies in ocean crusing or racing, you will always find in your travels skippers and navigators who areUSPS members and/or USPStrained.
Of all the 55,000 USPS members throughout the world, not one USPS instructor has ever received any monetary compensation for his/her voluntary services in the teaching the art of safe and practical seamenship. In 2017 the United States Power Squadron became America's Boating Club.
America's Boating Club Captree is one of eighteen squadrons that comprise Long Island's District 3 (D3). The squadron was founded in March, 1951. We are an active and sociable group of boating people dedicated to promoting the principles of safe boating and fellowship on the water. We are actively engaged in various public services to improve the quality of the boating experience for our members and the boating public.
You can find us on Long Island's beautiful south shore, centrally located between Babylon and Amityville. Our home waters encompass The Great South Bay. Look for our colorful Burgee and give us a hail.
